HILO Terms of Service

Last updated: October 6, 2026

1. Who we are

HILO ("we", "the service") is a web application for working with long documents and datasets, offered at hiloup.com by a startup that develops it. You can contact us at hello@hiloup.com with any question.

HILO's payments are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), which acts as our authorized reseller (Merchant of Record). This means that Paddle is the contracting party and is responsible for the payment processing, billing, and taxes applicable to your purchase. By paying, you also accept Paddle's Buyer Terms.

2. The service

HILO lets you upload or paste documents (Word or PDF) and datasets in order to, among other things:

AI features are included in the plans: HILO contracts and pays for the model service (Google Gemini), and you don't need a key of your own. AI usage is measured in hilos, as detailed in section 3.

Features that don't use AI (keyword search, manual coding, annotations, editing, and downloads, including a topic's summary) don't spend hilos and have no usage limit.

3. Accounts and plans

To save your projects to your cloud and to use the AI features, you need an account, which you create by signing in with Google or Microsoft.

What a hilo is. It is the unit HILO uses to measure artificial intelligence usage. Each operation spends the hilos that correspond to the model's actual work, so consumption depends on the length of the document and the type of operation. The application shows your updated balance after each use.

If an operation slightly exceeds your available allowance, HILO may allow it anyway so as not to interrupt work already in progress. That tolerance is exceptional and does not constitute an additional allowance.

Renewal and cancellation. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel before then. You can cancel at any time from Settings → Manage my subscription (Paddle portal), and you keep Premium access until the end of the period already paid.

If the renewal can't be charged. If the charge for a renewal fails, you keep Premium for 2 days while Paddle tries again, and the application tells you how to update your payment method. After that period, Premium is paused until the charge goes through; when it does, it comes back on its own. If the retries still can't collect payment after 30 days, the subscription is canceled automatically.

Refunds and chargebacks. If a purchase of hilos is refunded or disputed with your bank, the hilos from that purchase that you haven't yet used are deducted from your balance, in proportion to the amount returned. Your balance never goes negative.

If you buy from Brazil. If you use HILO as a consumer in Brazil, the Código de Defesa do Consumidor (Law No. 8.078/1990) also applies, whatever the language in which you read these terms. Because the contract is made online, you have a right of withdrawal (art. 49): you can withdraw from the purchase within 7 days, without having to give a reason, and receive a full refund of what you paid (hilos packs and subscriptions), even if you have used hilos. The details are in our Refund Policy. Nothing in these terms limits the rights that Brazilian law grants you as a consumer.

4. Your data and documents

Your documents are read in your own browser and saved in that browser and, if you signed in, in your Google Drive or your OneDrive. We do not store the content of your documents on our servers. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the documents you upload.

When you use an AI feature, the necessary passage goes through our server on its way to Google Gemini and is not stored. Google does not use those texts to train its models. The details are in our Privacy Policy.

5. Account deletion

You can delete your account whenever you want from Settings → Delete my account. If you have a subscription, it is canceled immediately, without waiting for the end of the period already paid, and any hilos you have left are lost. If you are entitled to a refund, request it before deleting the account. Your projects in Google Drive or OneDrive are not deleted. Which data is deleted and which is kept is explained in the Privacy Policy.

6. Acceptable use

You may not use HILO to process illegal content or content that violates the rights of third parties, nor to try to breach the security of the service or get around its usage limits. We reserve the right to suspend accounts that violate these terms.

7. Cancellation and refunds

See our Refund Policy for the full details.

8. Service availability

We work to keep HILO available continuously, but there may be interruptions due to maintenance, technical failures, or problems with external providers (Google, Microsoft, Paddle, or our infrastructure providers). If the AI doesn't respond, keyword search keeps working. Those interruptions do not give rise to a right to compensation beyond what is provided for in the Refund Policy.

9. Limitation of liability

HILO is offered "as is". The service uses artificial intelligence, whose results may contain errors or omissions: the final review of the document is always your responsibility. We do not guarantee that the service will be free of errors at all times. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages arising from the use of the service.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If the change is significant, we will let you know with a notice in the application. The date above shows the last update.
